Basic Facts About Domain Registration Renewal

Written by admin on September 7, 2010 – 6:07 PM -

Domain registration renewal is an essential procedure that must not be skipped in acquiring domain names over the internet. When you register for a certain domain name, remember that  you only own it for a limited period of time. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) allows for up to 10 years of maximum period of registration for a domain name. Once a domain name reaches its expiration date, it is in danger of being acquired by another party. This is why domain registration renewal should not be overlooked since as you don’t want others having a right over your domain name especially if it’s already well-known..

So what are the consequences when you fail to register or renew your domain name? Upon reaching the expiration date, a total of 60 days is still given to you so you can ably conduct a domain registration renewal before possibly ownership of the domain name. It will take 30 days of grace period after which the domain will be deactivated. Then there will be another 30 days of redemption period. If you neglect to act within the 60 days given , the domain name will be deleted from the registry after 5 days. When this happens, that domain name is available again.

Remember to always keep track of the expiration date of your domain name lest you lose the site  forever. It is a good practice to list in your planner or calendar the date of domain registration renewal so this important task would not be overlooked. This way you are protected from facing unpleasant consequences related to forgetting the domain registration renewal date.

Also, if you have the means to do so it is suggested  that you register or renew a domain for the maximum period that is possible for your website. While it may not be practical to renew a domain for 10 years since a lot could happen and there is a possibility that your website may not be there anymore, at least make a long-term feasible prediction so that you can register the domain name more than the minimum amount of time. This is  a smart  move that saves you some money as some domain registrars do give discounts to websites that avail of a longer registration period. It also lessens the burden of having to do domain registration renewal every time.

There are a lot of domain registration sites out there that you can choose from. I currently have been using one which I tend to like. it is Godaddy.com. They tend to offer some pretty good deals when it comes to price. Just do a search to find one you might like.

Fortunately many domain registration services, including GoDaddy, now offer automatic domain renewal to keep your domain names safe.

As to registering them long-term, there is a hidden benefit to this as well. Even if you’re only planning to use the site for a year or two, by the time it’s finished you’ll have built up both traffic and hopefully some PageRank. Rather than abandoning those when you’re finished with the site, simply point the domain name to your latest site to keep both the traffic and any PR strength.
